Part 1: Increased Cardiorespiratory Stress During Submaximal Cycling After Ketone Monoester Ingestion in Endurance-Trained Adults

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the rationale behind supplementing with exogenous ketone bodies to enhance exercise performance as opposed to adhering to a ketogenic diet.
  • Summarize the exercise responses to ingesting a large dose of a ketone body supplement and connect these responses to each other.
  • Interpret the physiological and metabolic responses to ketone body supplementation through the context of your profession. 

Snapshot:

I am a PhD Candidate at McMaster University studying exercise responses to ketone body supplementation and have a background in sports nutrition research and applying these scientific findings to athletes. Like my research interests, I enjoy the outdoors, nutrition, and hockey, though I am unfortunately a Maple Leafs fan. This talk will explore the unique physiological state induced by ketone body supplementation that comprises a high availability of both ketone bodies and carbohydrates and whether this strategy can impact performance. 

Part 2: Skeletal muscle characteristics and remodelling in elite master athletes

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand that lifelong exercise can protect against many of the age-related changes that often occur in skeletal muscle. 
  • Skeletal muscle remodelling may be similar between older non-exercising individuals and master athletes.  

Snapshot:

I am currently a CIHR-funded postdoctoral research fellow in Prof. Stuart Phillip's protein metabolism research group in the Department of Kinesiology, and a McCall-MacBain Postdoctoral Fellow, at McMaster University. The focus of my research is to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern skeletal muscle adaptation in response to use (i.e., resistance and aerobic exercise), disuse (i.e., immobilization/bed rest), and sarcopenia of aging. My expertise lies in the use of stable isotopic tracers – both acute infusion and deuterated water - to study muscle protein metabolism and I have a particular intertest in the study of unique populations such as master athletes as they offer the opportunity to investigate inherent/biological aging in the absence of confounding influences (i.e., reduced physical activity).
